HOUSEKEEPER STOLE RINGS

To repay £10 to pawnbroker

A housekeeper who admitted stealing three rings from her employers because she was in financial difficulties, was fined £4 at Croydon Magistrates' Court on Monday.

Mrs. Margaret Minnie Griffiths (49), of Gleneagle Road, Streatham, pleaded guilty to two charges. They alleged that she stole a £30 diamond ring from Miss Doris May Baggs, at Christian Fields, Norbury, and two rings, worth £10, belonging to Miss Amy Hilda Baggs.

It was stated that Mrs. Griffiths was employed by the Misses Baggs and was left in the house by herself all day. Miss Doris Baggs missed the diamond ring, and then her sister went to a deed box that had not been opened for some years and discovered that the other two rings were missing.

When she was accused of the thefts, Mrs. Griffiths admitted the offences and produced pawn tickets which showed that she had pledged the rings for £10.

Ordering Mrs. Griffiths to make restitution to the pawnbroker, the chairman (Col. C.C.O. Whiteley) told her that the Bench were treating her very leniently, in view of her previous good character. They hoped she would not be in trouble again.
