A natural musician, starting piano at the age of six and violin at ten, his first love was always singing, originally as a soprano. He broadcast on BBC radio at twelve and discovered his counter-tenor voice at Cambridge. He impressed Christopher Hogwood, Alfred Deller, and John Eliot Gardiner without formal training. He sang in the Monteverdi Choir for twenty-five years and was lay-clerk for a year or so in St Albans Abbey. |
