Marjorie Jarvis-Gallagher passed away peacefully at age 97 in Chicago, IL on Sunday, April 19, 2015.

She was born on May 20, 1917 in Chatham, Kent, England. Her father, Charles T Jarvis, was a prominent business man in the UK's Medway river towns. He had a passion for football and was actively involved in the Chatham Football club. Her Mother, Emma (Hogan), ran the household and loved to sing and play the piano. She had one younger brother Norman and an older sister, Pauline, both deceased.

Marjorie married aspiring writer Alan Gallagher in the late 1940's and later immigrated to the US seeking job opportunities. That marriage produced one child, a daughter, Sarra Gallagher, who survives. The couple later divorced.

Marjorie loved clothes, jewelry and makeup; image and presentation was her thing! She was known to wear flamboyant designer clothing and flashy jewelry. She loved a good Vodka tonic (with lemon) and a festive glass of Krug Champaign.

Her passion for clothes led her to a successful career selling designer clothing at the famous Saks Fifth Avenue on Michigan Avenue in Chicago. Her customer base was prominent Chicago area women who looked to her for suggestions on fashion and presentation. She spent a total of 40 years working for Saks Fifth Avenue (1958 thru 1998).

Marjorie loved sports; particularly Horse Racing, Tennis and Golf. She and her friends would spend hours watching the horses race and betting on them at either the Arlington or Hawthorn race tracks in the Chicago area.

She never missed the prestigious Wimbledon Grand Slam tennis tournament! However, no matter which tennis tournament was on or, what time of day, when Roger Federer was playing, she would stay up all night to watch him compete. Her golfing hero was Tiger Woods who she referred to as "my Tiger."

Services will be held for Marjorie on two continents. In the US, May 18th at the Breakers 5333 N. Sheridan Rd. in Chicago at 1:30 pm. In the UK, on September 16th at the Charing Crematorium in Charing Kent, UK at 3 pm. Per her request, her ashes will be scattered in the same area as her father, Charles Thomas Jarvis.

HID BOOK UNDER ANOTHER

Sydney Alfred Robinson (50), of High Street, Rainham, was fined £3 at Chatham Magistrates Court on Friday for stealing a paper-backed book valued at 1s. 6d. from a Gillingham newsagent. He pleaded guilty and said he was thoroughly ashamed of what he had done.

Prosecuting, Chief-Inspector E.G. Everett told the bench that Robinson visited the newsagent's shop of Mr. Norman Charles Jarvis in Canterbury Street on 6th April. Mr. Jarvis saw him take two paper-backed books from a rack outside the shop and slip one under the other.

Robinson came into the shop and paid 2s. 6d. for the top book, the other one being hidden. Mr. Jarvis followed him outside and questioned him about the other book.

Robinson denied taking it, but when Mr. Jarvis searched him and produced it he replied, "I must have taken it by mistake."

Later, however, when seen by the police, Robinson admitted taking the other book from the rack.
